Floating Offshore Wind in Norway

TetraSpar Demonstrator

In Norway, we are demonstrating the TetraSpar concept, which is a tubular steel structure with a suspended keel.

The TetraSpar Demonstrator project uses a 3.6MW turbine and was assembled in the port of Grenaa in Denmark. The platform, including the turbine, was towed to the Metcentre test site in Norway and installed safely. The test site located 10 kilometres offshore with a water depth of 200m.

Status: In operation since November 2021

TetraSpar Innovation Challenge

Innovations for floating wind turbines

The TetraSpar consortium (Shell, TEPCO, RWE and Stiesdal Offshore Technologies) invited start-ups, scale-ups, research institutes, companies and individuals to participate in a global innovation competition. The aim of the competition was to accelerate the development of floating wind turbines, use innovative solutions to reduce costs, overcome technical challenges and minimise the impact on the environment.

The consortium received over 40 exciting applications for the innovation competition from 15 different countries. 8 exciting global innovations were selected to be tested on the floating offshore wind project.

Visit the innovation competition website to find out more about the competition and the innovations now being tested.
