Environmental protection
We feel committed to protecting the environment, conserving natural resources and reducing emissions.
Our climate targets are science-based and align with the ambitious goal of the Paris Climate Agreement
We are a company in transition, clearly guided by ambitious and science-based targets. In 2023 our 2030 and 2040 emission reduction targets have been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative to be in alignment with a 1.5-degree pathway. With our growth in renewables and our phase down of fossil fuel power generation we are committed to the targets of the Paris Climate Agreement. In the past years, we have already halved our emissions from the plants we operate – and we are continuing this path by building more and more wind and solar assets to make a climate-friendly energy system a reality.
For 2030 we seek to achieve a reduction of over 70% for emissions per MWh of produced electricity (Scope 1 + 2) and a reduction of 42% in indirect emissions from our upstream and downstream value chain (Scope 3), both from a 2022 baseline. By 2040, we want to achieve Net Zero by reducing greenhouse gas emissions even further with remaining emissions being offset by carbon credits or own projects. We are walking the talk when transitioning: By reducing coal-fired power generation step by step until we close our last unit in 2030, by planning for transforming our natural gas assets and by looking at important levers to reduce our footprint with suppliers, customers and partners, e.g. on green steel and concrete. We are going through this change with the people in mind and aim to transition in a just and fair manner, taking care for the employees and communities affected by the shift from coal to renewables.
RWE is helping to shape the sustainable future of the world’s power supply. As part of society and a key player in the worldwide energy market, we are aware of the responsibility that goes with our role. We exercise that responsibility every day by applying clear principles to our corporate and social actions. Every single person at RWE – from Executive Board members and managers to colleagues and line staff – contributes by acting responsibly towards others and the environment. For RWE, taking responsibility means taking socially relevant issues into consideration in our corporate decision-making processes, keeping an eye on the consequences of our actions beyond our own area of responsibility and considering corporate activities from an ecological, social and ethical standpoint as well as from a business perspective.
Corporate Responsibility is part of the contribution RWE makes to sustainable development and responsible business management. Everything from environmental protection and climate-change mitigation, social concerns and human rights through to responsible corporate governance is taken into account – as RWE does justice to its responsibility in every sense.
Our aim is not just to report on our business activities transparently. We also want to explain how and why we make our decisions. Our annually published report contains the key information about RWE and its subsidiary companies, our long-term goals and what we have already achieved along the way.
