When Manuela Neuroth came out as transgender in the late 2010s, she wasn’t aware of any community at RWE where she could share experiences and connect.
In response, she proactively reached out to the Head of Diversity and the Company Executive Board, proposing the establishment of the LGBT*IQ & Friends network at RWE. Since its inception, the network has experienced significant growth, boasting a current membership of more than 484 individuals and standing as one of the largest employee LGBT*IQ networks in the energy sector.
This network plays a vital role, connecting and offering a supporting environment for people internally or for those who have questions about the LGBT*IQ community. They also host events where they share their experiences and offer feedback to RWE about changes to create a more inclusive environment.
During Energising Our Inclusive Culture Week in 2023, Manuela shared her touching story with us: “From Fear and Shame to Freedom and Happiness – My Little Trans Story”. Through her narrative, Manuela took her audience on an emotional journey through her very personal story. Recounting her life as a husband and a father, during which she grappled with suppressed her suspicions of being different and the fear of judgment if she were to come out. However, to this day, she is still pleasantly surprised when she describes the support and warmth she experiences at RWE. Freely admitting that it was she herself who was prejudiced when she feared that others might reject her.
At RWE, we are committed to building a welcoming and supportive workplace – one where people can be their true selves in every regard and contribute to a culture of empathy and inclusivity. When we can live our individual truths, we can focus our talents and expertise to secure a green and sustainable future for all.
