To the jobs
Civil Engineer Michiel from RWE Technology International

RWE is growing internationally and nearly every day new colleagues join #TEAMRWE. We recently launched our interview series where we talk to newcomers from different areas of RWE. Find out how their first months went, what surprised them at RWE and why they chose to become part of #TEAMRWE.

In the fourth part of the series, you will meet Michiel, Civil Engineer in the Netherlands for RWE Technology International (RWE TI), part of RWE Generation. He is impressed by the team spirit in #TEAMRWE, that all his colleagues work with so much passion on their projects and he is looking forward to when the construction of the FUREC project begins.

What is your job and how did you come to work for RWE?

I work as a Civil Engineer in the Netherlands for RWE TI. After a period of 15 years working for engineering companies in the industrial sector, I wanted to broaden my horizons. Within RWE, I work on projects at all stages of the process, from developing concepts right through to commissioning, so not only the engineering phase. Working within a big company, and being located at power plants, gives a lot of scope to take on responsibilities.

How were your first months here at RWE? Does reality match your expectations?

I have a really nice working environment with friendly and supportive colleagues. Everyone is willing to assist when help or further explanation is required. The team spirit is great!

What surprised you the most?

The working mentality: all my colleagues work with so much passion on their projects and always go the extra mile whatever needs to be done.

What has been one of your highlights working for RWE so far?

For the FUREC project, we are busy with the design of new waste recovery and pelletisation units for hydrogen purposes. We’ll be using ships as one of the ways to transport the municipal waste to the new facility, so I’ve been working on a technical specification and the design concept for a new quay structure including the foundation for a 90-metre long terminal building.

What do you like most about working as a Civil Engineer at RWE?

Providing design concepts for structures made from structural steel and/or reinforced concrete. Writing clear and transparent engineering reports such as project specifications and scope of works, and presenting them in our meetings together with the engineering contractors.

What are you looking forward to in the future?

I’m really looking forward to when the go-ahead is finally given for the FUREC project and realising the project in future.
