PV & Storage Jackerath

At the site of the Garzweiler opencast mine near Titz-Jackerath, RWE is operating an innovative utility-scale photovoltaic plant with an integrated battery storage system. At peak output, the solar modules can provide 12.1 megawatts of electricity.

The plant is located on the western edge of the open-cast mine and will be dismantled after the end of operations as part of the recultivation process, during which the site will be tipped over with fertile soil so that new fields can be established.

In 2021, RWE was awarded the contract for the “Jackerath PV & Battery Storage” project in the German Federal Network Agency‘s innovation tender. Construction work began the following year. The plant was commissioned in summer 2023 and has been producing and storing electricity ever since.
