Generations and internationality

Working across generations

The differing perspectives and experiences of our employees at RWE brings immense value to the table. Collaboration between various generations of employees is critical to enhance our ideas as well as introducing the next generation into the workplace. This is why we aim to build diverse teams by also taking age into account.

“Actively approaching people and having the courage to tackle and implement new topics – these traits helped me to pave the way at the time to become one of the youngest managers at RWE. Generational diversity brings together younger employees with a fresh perspective with experienced staff who can draw on their experience. By appreciating and tapping into each other’s strengths, we will come up with better solutions.”

Life-long learning ensures our long-term success

Our employees bring a rich array of skills and extensive experience to the table, fostering our enduring and sustainable growth as well as our success. Creating a work environment that facilitates personal growth and provides tailored support at each life stage is of utmost importance to us. Consequently, we are committed to promoting lifelong learning for every employee, regardless of age group.

Renée Lee – Human Resources Graduate - UK

What are your personal strengths in the workplace?

I believe my ability to connect with people from all walks of life to be a personal strength of mine. Adapting conversation styles and seeking to understand other viewpoints helps me to form relationships in the workplace.

Describe a time where you learnt from a colleague from a different generation than you.

Being new to the corporate world means I have learnt a lot recently. By observing and working with my current team, I learn every day more about networking and professionalism. For instance, by working closely with a colleague from a more experienced generation, I could observe how they connected with others at department meetings and offsites in order to work on my own interpersonal relationship skills with those who are in more senior positions than I.

What do you value the most in the workplace?

For me, the option to work in a hybrid model is something I strongly value. I’m introverted and so I appreciate being able to work hard whilst simultaneously being able to recharge my batteries.

How do you best communicate in the workplace?

I tend to prefer instant messages and emails over calls and face-to-face meetings.

Dirk Beyenburg – Technology Division Lignite - Germany

What are your personal strengths in the workplace?

My strengths lie in accompanying employees in their work, establishing a team culture to cope with upcoming changes, actively approaching other people, and having the courage to address and implement new topics (it should never be boring). Otherwise, I am a very structured and goal-oriented person in my actions. It is said that my enthusiasm is contagious, especially in the field of transformation. Even today, with a different task of leading the excavator inspection, I still guide teams through change, support teams in addressing issues, and contribute my knowledge of NWoW methodology and transformation.

Describe a time where you learnt from a colleague from a different generation than you.

Yes, of course. In the transformation project of the mining division, I led a team of 13 colleagues of various generations (from early 20s to 60s) with different professional experiences and interdisciplinary education and qualifications. The team learned a lot from each other. All team members were open to helping each other and sharing perspectives and experiences.

What do you value the most in the workplace?

The freedom to shape things. Being able to accompany teams in different locations with different tasks and providing a framework for professional actions. The mutual respect within the team and the team culture.

How do you best communicate in the workplace?

I prefer to be on-site and speak with colleagues. Since my team is decentralised across the Rhineland region over three mines and three refining sites, good online communication is often necessary too.

Jodi-Ann Lyons – Senior Director, DEI – USA

What are your personal strengths in the workplace?

I’m genuinely curious about the way things work and I’m also passionate about the work that I do. Those personal strengths combined with my empathetic nature and desire to be helpful fosters great collaboration among my colleagues.

Describe a time where you learned from a colleague from a different generation than you?

I would often help and older colleague with all the “technical” aspects of their work. They in turn coached me to leverage my skills into a leadership position on a project and eventually within our team.

What do you value the most in the workplace?

Respect, trust, and accountability are the things that I value the most in the workplace. I believe that if all three are present, everyone in the team will feel like a valued contributor to the organization’s success.

How do you best communicate in the workplace?

I prefer to communicate via email. I always try to anticipate possible questions ahead of time and answer them while relaying my message (usually with bullet points and the occasional color highlight).

Seiji Miyaki – Attract & Recruit APAC - Japan

What are your personal strengths in the workplace?

As the only member based in Asia from the Attract & Recruit Team, being able to work independently to recruit talents in the region while collaborating with the team and hiring managers back in Europe in a different time zone.

Describe a time where you learned from a colleague from a different generation than you?

Being so far away from Europe, I always learn a lot in terms of policies, guidelines, best practices, latest information and news from my team members who are very happy to help when needed.

What do you value the most in the workplace?

The trust, transparency and respect that I receive within the team. Your hard work is appreciated, if something is not done right there is the feedback and when you need the help someone is there to give you support.

How do you best communicate in the workplace?

Most of the time is via Teams or emails, but if I am in the office then a face to face meeting.
