Energy Transition Investments

RWE Energy Transition Investments (“RWE ETI”), established in 2011 as RWE Principal Investments, is an investment vehicle of RWE Supply & Trading GmbH with a mandate to manage a diverse portfolio of Private Equity type asset investments and company shareholdings. RWE ETI’s focus is on achieving attractive returns on the capital deployed whilst also ensuring new investments are consistent with RWE’s strategic goals and supportive of the global energy transition. Investments are intended to be complementary to, rather than competing with the renewables’ core business. The team is open to working with suitable co-investors on transactions, and has done so successfully on multiple previous investments.

With a successful history of diverse investments across the energy landscape, the RWE Energy Transition Investments team will continue to leverage its extensive transaction and international energy markets expertise to explore new opportunities that are aligned with RWE’s target of carbon neutrality by 2040.

The team manages a diverse portfolio of existing investments in companies and assets whose value is correlated to the value of the commodity that the company or asset produces / trades / transports. Recent and future investments are concentrated on business areas expected to prosper based on analysis and understanding of how energy markets will develop through the energy transition.

A team of highly experienced investment experts split between RWE offices in London and New York. This ensures effective interaction with the geographically diverse portfolio companies, whilst allowing the team to maximise synergies with RWE’s core business wherever possible.

Rob MacIntyre

Head of ETI

Rob joined RWE in 2018, bringing extensive experience in finance and private equity. He began his career as an investment banker at Lehman Brothers before focusing on energy and natural resources investments at Denham Capital and TrailStone. He graduated cum laude with a degree in Economics from Middlebury College and holds a Master’s degree from London Business School.

Stephen O'Reilly

Principal

Stephen has over 15 years’ experience from various roles in the energy industry. He joined the RWE Group in 2009 and worked on LNG deal origination and business development in Europe, Middle East and India. In 2013, Stephen joined the Principal Investments team, and leads the funds’ investment activities in North America. Stephen holds a BE in Mechanical Engineering from University College Dublin.

Akhil Shah

Investment Professional

Akhil joined ETI in 2026. He has over 10 years' experience in the energy transition sector, having worked in advisory and growth equity investing roles. Most recently, he worked at bp ventures, where he led the origination and execution of growth-stage investments worldwide. Akhil holds a BA in Politics from Durham University and an MA in Middle Eastern Studies from the University of Chicago. He is also a CFA Charterholder.

Marwan Essabar

Associate

Marwan joined RWE Energy Transition Investments in 2025 after a year in the International Hydrogen Investments team. Prior to joining RWE, Marwan worked in investment banking for three years at Santander and Société Générale. He holds an MSc in Finance from Toulouse Business School.

Bill Cull

Associate

Bill joined RWE Energy Transition Investments in 2024 and brings experience in project finance and private equity. Prior to joining RWE, Bill was an Analyst on the Investment Team at HASI. Bill holds a Bachelor’s in Economics from the University of Virginia.
